Manny Pacquiao’s six-round sparring session was cut short on Tuesday after the Pacquiao broke his sparring partner’s nose during their exchange.
Russian boxer Ruslan Nogayev sustained a bloodied nose while slugging it out with the Filipino champion at the Shape Up Gym in Cooyeesan Hotel Plaza in Baguio City.
The incident was witnessed by Pacquiao’s chief security in Baguio City, Caloy Hobo.
Hobo told Snow Badua and Dennis Guillermo of NBN 4’s Teledyaryo Sports that Pacquiao first had a three-round session with another Russian, Ruslan Provodnikov.
This was followed by another session with Nogayev.
“’Yung nakasparring niya dalawa, ‘yung isa yung naputukan… ‘Yung una tatlo[ng rounds], ‘yung pangalawa tatlo rin sana pero dumugo ang ilong, tumigil na,” Hobo said in the interview.
Nogayev was supposed to give Pacquiao three rounds, but because of the injury they had to cut the session short.
Pacquiao decided to do several rounds of mitts workout with Freddie Roach to make up for the shortened sparring session.
Hobo said the Filipino boxing icon displayed his usual speed and power during Tuesday’s workout.
“May speed na. Okay na yung laro niya,” he said. “Siguro nasa 80% na.”
Pacquiao is slated to defend his WBO welterweight title against Timothy Bradley on June 9.
He will train for two more days in Baguio City before driving back to Manila on Thursday.
Pacquiao will fly to Los Angeles on Saturday to continue his camp at Roach’s Wild Card Gym.
