The SMART Gilas Pilipinas national team demolished Malaysia, 119-46, to sweep its Group B elimination assignments in the 19th Super Keung Sheung Cup International Basketball Championship Thursday at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wanchai, Hong Kong.
Greg Slaughter led six Filipinos in double figures with 27 points on 12-of-14 shooting from the field to help the Philippine five cement its No. 1 seeding in its group.
Fellow cadet pool members Kevin Alas and RR Garcia each had 18 points for the SMART Gilas, which led from start to finish in the game to stay unbeaten in the tournament.
KG Canaleta and Justin Melton contributed 14 points apiece with the latter adding 12 rebounds and four steals. Jake Pascual also tallied a double-double effort with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
It was the third straight lopsided win for the Philippines, which also routed Indonesia’s Under-23 squad, 110-78, and Hong Kong, 85-58.
After taking a 24-10 lead in the first period, the Filipinos outscored the Malaysians in the next quarter, 31-14, to carry a comfortable 55-24 cushion going to the break.
The Philippines was so dominant that it held Malaysia down to just four points in the fourth period while scoring 32 en route to a 73-point victory.
SMART Gilas will meet the loser of the Southern California Fukienese Association (SCFA)-Chongsak Park Lane Wolves in the semifinals on Saturday.
