Kevin Alas was unstoppable in today’s game, setting a new career-high of 35 points in Letran’s demolition on Saint Benilde, 97-83, in their second round meeting in Season 88 action of the NCAA at the FilOil Flying V Arena.
The Knights spoiled the return of Saint Benilde guard Joel Tolentino, who is back from a three-game suspension, and solidified their bid to catch the final four bus as they notched their eighth win against six losses. They are now just half a game behind fourth-placer Jose Rizal University, which has an 8-5 win-loss slate.
Big men Jam Cortes and Raymond Almazan, who both missed the Knights’ first meeting against the Blazers, made their presences felt with Cortes finishing with 13 points and eight boards while Almazan chipped in nine points and 13 rebounds.
“We’re still breathing, humihinga pa. Masaya ako sa laro kanina. We executed well offensively and defensively. Parang hindi kasi 100% ang nilaro ng Benilde,” said Letran coach Louie Alas.
It was a lopsided game in favor of the Knights right from the opening tip, with the Knights aware of the importance of their last few games. The biggest lead for this year’s host Letran stood at 29 points, 94-65, with the basket coming from Kevin Alas, who also finished with five boards, five assists, two steals and one block.
“Last game maganda kasi nilaro ko, kaya motivated ako maging consistent,” said Alas.
“Nagulat din ako na ganun na pala ang score ko.”
Carlo Lastimosa paced the Blazers with 23 markers while Tolentino managed to chip in 10 points.
The Blazers are still at the ninth spot with a 4-10 win-loss record.
